The Turken chicken is a breed of chicken commonly referred to as Naked Neck chickens since they naturally have no feathers on their neck and vent. Originating in Transylvania, these breed was primarily developed in Germany and remain quite popular in Europe; they are pretty rare in North America.
Turken chickens are a dual-purpose chicken and are rarely considered an exhibition bird. They are good producers of light brown eggs and have a large meaty body. Their lack of feathers on their neck cuts down on the necessary plucking for meat.
Turken chickens are quite adaptable to most climates and are considered disease -resistant. In the UK, accepted varieties include black, white, cuckoo, red, buff, and blue. In the US, only black, white, red and buff are accepted. All varieties have a single comb and a bright red neck and head due to sun exposure.
