Sussex is a breed of chicken that originated in England and was considered the standard table bird until the more modern Cornish crosses were developed. They are an excellent dual-purpose bird with a hearty body and excellent egg production. On average, Sussex chickens will produce 240 to 260 eggs per year and will continue to produce tinted or light brown eggs throughout the winter months.
Sussex chickens come in eight different colors, including brown, buff, red, light, speckled, silver, white and coronation. However, the brown and red varieties are quite rare. They are very good foragers and are comfortable in both free range and confinement. The hens go broody quite frequently in warmer months. Sussex chickens are a docile but curious breed.
