The Shetland goose is a breed of domestic geese native to the Shetland Islands in Scotland. While smaller than many other breeds, they are excellent foragers and considered very hardy birds. Shetlands are an auto-sexing breed, similar to the Cotton Patch and Pilgrim breeds, meaning they can be differentiated between male and female by appearance alone. Its foraging abilities have produced a shorter bill than many other geese and they are considered good parents that will mate for life.
Historically, Shetlands have been used to graze pastures and remove parasites that would harm sheep. Females will produce an average of 30 white eggs per year. Shetlands have been in the United States since 1997 but overall popular is considered too low to be recognized as an official breed by the American Poultry Association.
