The Santa Gertrudis breed is known worldwide to display great resistance to hot and humid environments and also to diseases and parasites. This breed results from a carefully planned cross between the Brahman and Shorthorn breeds.
The Santa Gertrudis are characterized by a dark cherry-red color, a short, smooth coat occasionally with white underline markings. Males sometimes have Zebu styled hump.
This breed displays ease of calving, good mothering abilities and an abundant supply of milk. Some individuals are horned or polled and they are all productive on pasture and in feedlots. They are mostly sought for beef productions for their ability to grow muscle at a young age and can be sold for their carcass almost at any age.
