Ryeland sheep are one of the oldest English breeds of sheep, dating back over seven centuries when monks in Herefordshire bred them to roam on rye pastures. Today, this breed is raised primarily for meat. Their docile temperament makes them an ideal breed for small farms.
Ryeland sheep have a reputation for their high fertility and are naturally polled. This breed was used to introduce the poll gene to the Dorset breed, creating the Poll Dorset. In Australia, all Ryeland’s are pure white and kemp free. However, in the United Kingdom a colored variation does exist. The wool does not felt and was considered the premier wool by Queen Elizabeth I.
