The polo pony is a term that describes a horse used in the game of polo. While it can be any breed, Thoroughbreds account for a large majority of them. Unlike a true pony breed, these horses are simply called ponies due to their agility instead of their size. Today, most Polo ponies average 61 inches in height. Due to the way in which these horses are used, they require considerable training and conditioning.
In order to play this lengthy game, they must be in excellent physical condition and be trained not to startle if they are bumped into or by the mallet or ball flying by their head. For games, their manes are hogged and tails braided to prevent tangling during the match.
