Originating in France, the Poitou donkey is one of the largest donkey breeds being selected for the production of large working mules with the Poitevin horse breed. It’s distinguished by its long hanging coat called a cadanette which resembles un-groomed cords.
A purebred Poitou has a massive bone structure and its coat is always dark brown or black. They do not display any stripes or cross markings but they do have a white underbelly, nose and rings around its eyes. Minimum height for jacks is 55 inches and jennies is 53 inches. They have large, long heads, strong necks, strong legs and long backs.
Their temperament is friendly and docile and despite being used for only breeding , they are now used in agriculture, driving and riding.
