The Pinzgauer breed, named the practical breed, comes from the Pinzgau region of Salzburg, Austria, which are known for their naturally chestnut red color with a unique white stripe along the length of the whole back. The chest, abdomen, udder and tail are also white. The breed is moderately sized with a heavy bone structure. The weight of cows ranges between 1,000-1,600 lbs and bulls average 2,000 lbs or more.
The Pinzgauers have docile dispositions, strong maternal instincts, calving ease and they easily adapt to different climates which make them ideal for breeding nursing cows. They also have firm and flexible skin that prevents insect infestations.
Their milk productivity averages on 4,000/5,000 kgs benefitted from their capacity for eating large amounts of food. They can also increase a lot of weight in a day yielding production with good quality beef with fine fiber and a light red color which makes them great for beef production.
