Unlike most breeds, the Pinto is a breed of horses based upon physical coloring instead of genetic background. Pinto horses have a dark but not black background coloring with large, random patches of white. This color conformation can occur in any breed although the Pinto is considered its own proper breed in America.

There are two recognized Pinto color patterns, Tobiano and Overo. Tobiano occurs most often and is characterized by rounded markings with white down the back and legs. Pinto horses with the Tobiano pattern have more white than dark. Overo is characteristic of white patches with jagged, crisp edges. If the background color is black, the horse is considered a Piebald.

Pinto horses are often associated with Native Americans who valued their supposed magical qualities in battle. The United States now has the largest number of Pinto horses in the world.
