The Piedmontese is domestic cattle originally from the Piedmont region in north-west Italy. While they are born fawn colored, all turn grey-white by maturity. They possess a unique gene mutation that causes hypertrophic muscle growth, also known as double-muscling. Since the myostatin gene is a protein responsible for stopping muscle growth, the inactive myostatin gene present in Piedmontese does not stop the muscle growth.
Purebred Piedmontese are homozygous for myostatin deficiency, sometimes making reproduction difficult due to the bulky size of its offspring. However, Piedmontese beef is well known in the specialty market for its unique properties. Piedmontese are also used for its rich milk that goes towards the production of many traditional cheeses of the region.
