Montadale is an American breed of domestic sheep developed by E.H. Mattingly in the 1930 as he strived to create the perfect sheep. To do this, he tried to combine the best qualities of the Midwestern mutton-style sheep with the big Western range sheep by breeding the Cheviot rams and Columbia ewes. This breed was thoroughly selected and bred for nine years before meeting the desired standard and being introduced to the world.
Today, Montadale sheep are considered dual-purposed, being used for both wool and meat. They have proved themselves to be extremely hardy, being bred and raised successfully in all areas of the country. Their wool is a very white with very little lanolin, giving it a greater yield than other breeds. It is not uncommon for Montadale wool to yield 2-4% higher than breed of the same grade from the same area.
