Holstein cattle, also known as Friesians outside of North America, are the world’s largest producing dairy animal. They are quite large, with cows weighing in around 1,500 pounds and standing 58 inches tall. When people think about cows, they frequently picture Holstein, with its distinctive black and white spotted appearance.
Holsteins are known for the superior milk production and preferred phenotypic characteristics, with each cow producing up to 23,000 pounds of milk per lactation. Today, Holsteins make up about 90% of the dairy cow population in the United States which is no surprise when you consider they produce more milk, fat and protein than any other dairy breed. There is minimal economic risk with Holsteins, as they have the lowest rate of inbreeding among cattle breeds.
