Chincoteague ponies, also known as the Assateague horse, are a breed of feral pony that lives Assateague Island in the United States. There are many legends that revolve around the origin of the Chincoteague ponies, the most likely of them that these ponies descend from livestock released on the island in the 17th century by colonists hoping to avoid taxes on the mainland. This breed is very similar to a horse but is commonly referred to as ponies due to their small stature, which averages 54 inches in their feral state. If bred domestically with proper nutrition, they can grow to heights of 58 inches.
Chincoteague ponies are seen in any solid color or pinto patterns, with pinto patterning being the most desirable. Every year, Pony Penning Day takes place when mounted riders bring a large herd across the channel to be auctioned off for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.
