This breed receives its name for being raised alongside Charolais cattle in the Saone et Loire area in France. They’ve been crossed with the British Dishley Leicester to become what they are nowadays. They are a popular breed having been imported to several countries.
Charollais sheep are a medium sized breed with a long loin and muscled hindquarters. Their head is wool free and pinkish grey and the wool they produce is sandy white, dense but fine to medium. They are used as first class terminal sires, producing lean and fast growing lambs. Ewes of the breed are fertile, lamb easily and have excellent maternal instincts. Ewes can weigh up to 200 lbs and rams between 240-360 lbs.
The breed is known to be docile and easy to maintain. They are a profitable breed, producing top quality butcher lambs with lean meat that is tender and flavorful.
