Buckeye is a breed of chicken originating in the state of Ohio and is the only chicken breed known to be developed by a woman. It was developed by breeding a black breasted red game fowl with Buff Cochin/Barred Rock offspring. They were originally called Pea Combed Rhode Island Reds but the name was changed to Buckeyes and officially recognized as a new breed in 1904. Primarily a mahogany red with black tails, Buckeye chickens lays brown eggs and are strong meat producers.
The Buckeye chicken is the only pure American breed that has a pea comb that when combined with its strong build makes it an excellent cold weather bird. It is well suited to small farms and backyard flocks. Its declining population makes it considered an endangered breed.
