bourbon-red-turkeyBourbon Red is an American breed of domestic turkey that is named after its distinctive red plumage. Bourbon Red turkeys have a dark base color with white feathers in the tail and a soft red band with white flight feathers. The standard for Bourbon Red’s allow for 30% red feathers in the tail, anymore and they are not recognized.

Originally from Kentucky, this breed is also referred to as Kentucky Redd or Bourbon Butternuts. Today, few Bourbon Red turkeys live up to the breed standards since there has been a complete lack of selective breeding. Raised as a meat bird, it was originally very popular in the turkey industry until the Broad Breasted White was adopted commercially. Today, it is one of the most popular heritage turkey breeds.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision. With over 25,000 different breeders listed on this website, it is impossible for us to be able to vouch for every one! And while we do our best to ensure only the top farmers are listed here, it's always best to double check yourself.
