Australorp chickens originated in Australia and have a reputation of being superior egg layers. A set of six Australorp hens set a world record in 1922-23 when they laid a collective 1,857 eggs during 365 consecutive days, with an average 309.5 eggs per hen. A new record has since been set after a single Australorp hen laid 364 eggs in 365 consecutive days.
Typically, Australorps who are well cared for will lay about 250 eggs per year. These eggs are usually light brown in color. This egg laying ability has led to Australorps being the honorary Chicken Breed of Australia. They are mainly black but can also blue, white, buff, splash, wheaten laced and golden. They also have a reputation of being good mothers and nest sitters.
