Also known as the American Saddle Horse, and is a multi-talented breed of riding horse capable of performing tasks very well. The most common ones are dressage, endurance riding, general riding, jumping, mounted athletics, and work. They possess several easy riding gaits, vigor and style.
American Saddlebreds reach a height between 15 to 17 hands and weigh between 1,000 and 1,200 pounds. They have well-shaped heads with a straight profile, long, arched necks, well-defined withers, correct leg conformation, and strong level backs. The croup is level with a high-carried tail. They are found in many colors but the most common colors are chestnut, bay, brown and black. Popular as show horses, many of this breed have also been featured in movies.
This breed has more health issues than others. With 6 known breed-specific health issues, owners have to watch out for epitheliogenesis imperfecta, hock lamenesses, lordosis, ring-bone, side-bone, and stifle.
