alpaca-pictureAn Alpaca is a domesticated species of South American camelid, similar in appearance to a small llama. They are most commonly found in herds within the Andes Mountains of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. Their history dates back thousands of years. Alpacas have been raised primarily for their fiber, which is used to make woven and knit items. The uses of this fiber are extremely varied, especially since it comes in 52 colors naturally. Besides their fiber, they are also raised for meat. Alpaca’s cannot be raised as pack animals due to their smaller size. There are two breeds of alpacas, the Suri and the Huacaya. These animals are always found in a herd with an alpha male, females and their offspring. Their diet consists of hay, grass and other plants although they will chew on anything they find.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision. With over 25,000 different breeders listed on this website, it is impossible for us to be able to vouch for every one! And while we do our best to ensure only the top farmers are listed here, it's always best to double check yourself.
