The Tennessee Walking horse, or Tennessee Walker, is a breed of gaited horse developed in the Southern United States for use on farms and plantations. It is a tall breed, averaging 59 – 68 inches in height with a long neck. This breed is accepted as any solid color or pinto pattern. Today, it is popular for its unique four-beat running walk and flashy movement. It is a popular choice for riding because of its sure-footedness, smooth gaits and calm temperament.
There are two categories of Tennessee Walking horses used in show competitions, “flat shod” and “performance.” The flat shod horses show less exaggerated movement and wear regular horseshoes. Performance horses however, wear built-up pads along with weighted devices that create the “big lick” style. These devices are banned by shows and the practice of soring was prohibited by the Horse Protection Act of 1970
