The Standardbred is an American horse breed that is popular for its ability in harness racing. Developed in the United States, the Standardbred can be traced back to a Thoroughbred born in England in 1780. Compared with the Thoroughbred, this breed has a longer body and is more muscular. Their height ranges from 56 – 68 inches and they usually weight between 800 – 1,000 pounds. They have a reputation as being very friendly with people and easy to train.
Standardbred horses are typically bay, brown or black in color with chestnut, gray and roan being seen as well. To be a registered Standardbred, the horse must be able to trot or pace a mile in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Today, many Standardbreds are able to complete the mile in 1 minute and 50 seconds. Besides harness racing, this breed is popular as a light buggy horse for the Amish people.
