Southdown is an English breed of sheep that was developed approximately 200 years ago. This small, dual-purposed sheep has been bred in different combinations to create many other breeds, including the Canterbury lamb, the Hampshire, the Oxford Down and the Suffolk. Today, this breed is raised primarily for meat and is broken into two sub-breeds.
Southdown sheep raised for commercial meat production are larger than their traditional counterparts. Traditional, English Southdown’s are bred specifically for their smaller size with a focus on wool production. Mature ewes produce between 5 – 8 pounds of fleece with a 40 – 55% yield. This breed of sheep is used to graze weeds in the vineyards of California and New Zealand since they are too short to reach the grapes.
