Shetland is an ancient breed of pony native to Scotland that is extremely hardy due to the harsh native climate. They range in height between 28 – 44 inches with a small head, disheveled looking face and heavy coat.
Shetland ponies are often used by children for riding and in show competitions and are quite popular for petting zoos and other events. Typically, they are gentle, calm and intelligent. However, they can be impatient and uncooperative, especially if not properly trained.
Shetland ponies are one of the strongest breeds of all horses and ponies by size. They have the ability to carry twice their own weight. This breed is known for being long-lived, often living longer than 30 years but are also more likely to have heart issues.
