Rocky Mountain is an American breed of horses that despite its name, actually originated in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. This breed was developed in the late 19th century from a foundation stallion brought to Kentucky from the western United States. While any solid color is accepted, Rocky Mountains are well known for their chocolate colored coat with flaxen tail and mane.
Similar to the Racking Horse, this breed also exhibits the singlefoot gait. This is a versatile breed that has been used for riding, driving and as a light draft horse. Today however, it is used mainly for tail riding and cattle work. It has a reputation as a hardy animal that can handle the harsh mountain winters. They also have the highest risk of any breed for multiple congenital ocular anomalies (MCOA), a genetic ocular syndrome.
