Muscovy ducks are a South American species and are the only domestic breed that isn’t derived from the Mallard. The wild variety is only black and white but other breeds have produced colors including white, black, chocolate, lavender and blue.
Male birds are large weighing up to 12 lbs and females 7 lbs. They have strong sharp claws on their feet which makes them capable to perch on branches. Males have red, warty fleshy outgrowths above the beak and under the eyes. They have an interesting personality and are very intelligent, often flying up to roost. The meat of the Muscovy isn’t greasy and it’s often compared to veal rather than poultry. They are considered the quackless ducks because they rarely quack. You may find them mostly in a wild state or domesticated for meat purposes but in some areas of the US, they are an invasive species.
