The Kerry Hill Sheep is a breed which was developed in the hills around the small town of Kerry, on the English/Welsh borders. They are well balanced sturdy sheep with ears set high and free from wool. They have a black nose and sharply defined black and white markings on the head and legs. Both ewes and rams are polled. Their fleece is usually white and is amongst the softest of British Wools. Average staple length is 10 cm. Average weight of fleece is 6lbs.
The weight of a mature ram will range from 140 to 155 lbs, ewe weigh from 120 to 140 lbs. Lambing 175% is readily achieved. This is where the Kerry Hill excels, producing a large strong framed sheep that can be crossed with quality meat types, to produce the ideal type of carcass, that is sought after today.
