The Icelandic horses are small, “pony-sized” horses that are long-lived and hardy. It’s the only breed of horse in Iceland and isstill traditionally used for shepherding work. They are also used for riding, leisure, showing, racing, gait performing and even for their meat.
Icelandic horses have few diseases in Iceland and laws exist to prevent importation of livestock and exported Icelandic horses cannot return. They stand 13-14 hands tall and weigh between 730-840 lbs. The Icelandic is a "five-gaited" breed, known for its sure-footedness and ability to cross rough terrain.
Icelandic colors include chestnut, dun, bay, black, gray, palomino, pinto and roan. They have short muscular necks and legs and long backs with a mane and tail full of coarse hair and a double coat for insulation in cold temperatures. They aren’t easily spooked and are friendly and easy to handle although enthusiastic and very self-assured.
