Beltsville Small White is a breed of domestic turkey that was developed at the USDA’s Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland in 1934. This breed was developed to fill a specific consumer need. Research showed the consumer wanted a smaller turkey with no dark pinfeathers. Beltsville Small White turkeys are exactly that, a relatively small turkey with an entirely white plumage. They were developed using genetics from White Holland, White Austrian, Narragansett, Bronze, and wild turkeys. Due to their small size however, they could not meet the demand of restaurants and have practically disappeared. Today, Beltsville Small White turkeys are extremely rare and those interested are usually enthusiasts or involved with heritage breeds.
