The African goose is a breed of domestic goose that ironically, has no connection to Africa. These birds are actually descendants of the wild swan goose. African geese are quite large compared with other breeds and have been known to have more docile temperaments. They share many characteristics with the Chinese goose but can be set apart by their different knob shape and larger dewlap. Adult Africans have a large knob attached to its forehead and a crescent shaped dewlap that hangs from its neck and lower jaw. They produce fewer eggs than other breeds as well, averaging 25-40 eggs per year, compared with 40-65 eggs from a Chinese goose. There are three accepted color varieties, including white, brown and buff.
